About Gabrielle Marceau

A Love of Cinema

Professor Marceau not only studied cinema in university but is still very much involved with that world. She is a writer and editor of film criticism and is well-versed in the industry. “I am very interested in how films have changed over the century, and I hope to teach more courses that look at the shifts in film, through the industry, the artistry, and viewership,” says Marceau. Professor Marceau finds joy in teaching film especially to older adults. She appreciates that her students are familiar with film history, and that she has the ability to introduce them to lesser-known gems and genres. For Professor Marceau, having students possess knowledge of the classics helps bring varied experiences and interests into class discussions.

A New Direction for Education

Professor Marceau may be new to The LIFE Institute but her previous professional experiences make her highly qualified and capable to teach here. At The LIFE Institute, she has the ability to create her own syllabus and be creative. Marceau has been able to lecture on topics that inspire and interest her. She has taught two film courses at LIFE, one on film adaptations of Gothic literature concerning works like Dracula and the like, and the second course focused on Film Noir. These two courses are very different but allow her to impart knowledge on the changing industry. “I can share the work and ideas I’m most excited about. It also allows for quite a bit of creativity and discovery on my end. The members I’ve had in my courses are all enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the material, and I appreciate how much I get out of our engaging discussions,” says Marceau.

A Look into Academics

Professor Marceau gets excited about her classes at The LIFE Institute. Her students are knowledgeable and engaged in the material. She believes that the courses at LIFE have been rewarding for her as well as her students. In researching and preparing her lectures, there is always something fascinating to uncover. She hopes to bring this spirit of awe to her students and her class.

Joining The LIFE Institute as an Instructor

Professor Marceau was urged to join by a fellow writer and film critic who taught at The LIFE Institute. She has only taught two courses at The LIFE Institute this past year but finds teaching to be rewarding and a natural fit.

When Professor Marceau is not lecturing on the changes in film she works on writing film criticisms. She recently moved back to her roots in Toronto’s east end where she enjoys mid-day walks and works on writing her book.
